Finding an Outlet — Rugby, Bodybuilding & Addiction

Rugby gave me my first taste of freedom. On the pitch, I could channel my anger, energy and frustration into something positive. Later, bodybuilding became another outlet. I wanted to feel strong, respected, and in control.

But with sport came temptation. Steroids promised faster results, and weekends brought drinking and ecstasy with friends. At the time, it felt like I was living the best days of my life, no trouble in the world, just good times. But underneath, I was masking the pain and fear from my past.
When Escape Turns to Risk
This pattern is common. For many young men, sport and nightlife provide belonging, but also exposure to substances that quickly spiral out of control. According to Public Health England, around 275,000 people in the UK are in contact with drug and alcohol services each year, but countless more never seek help.
Where Support Exists
We Are With You – free confidential support for drug, alcohol and mental health issues.
CALM – Campaign Against Living Miserably – supporting men at risk of suicide and offering a lifeline during crisis.
James' Place – saves the lives of men in suicidal crisis. They offer free, life-saving treatment to suicidal men at their centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle..
My Reflection
At the time, I didn’t see my behaviour as a problem. I thought I was invincible. It took years, and many mistakes, before I learned the true cost.
